MBB Wins in OT, Hill notches 1,000th Point

MARIETTA – For the second time in eight days, the Heidelberg University Men's Basketball team needed more than 40 minutes to secure a win, this time earning a thrilling 112-99 overtime victory over Marietta. The win improves Heidelberg's record to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the OAC, while Marietta falls to 10-11, 4-10 in conference play.

In a contest that featured 17 ties and 13 lead changes, Heidelberg seemed poised to close it out in regulation. With under 10 seconds left and the Student Princes clinging to a three-point lead, Marietta's Darius Carden delivered a shot for the ages. Channeling his best Ray Allen impression, Carden drifted to the corner and nailed a contested, game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. The roar inside Ban Johnson Arena signaled a momentum shift to the home team—at least for the moment.

But from the start of overtime, Heidelberg seized control. Elijah Harden set the tone on the first possession, driving through the lane and finishing a tough layup to reclaim the lead. Moments later, Eric Panning swatted away a Marietta layup attempt, sparking a fast break with Harden draining a pull-up jumper in transition. Heidelberg quickly built a lead and didn't look back.

The defining moment came with just over two minutes remaining in overtime. Manny Hill, sitting on nine points and just two shy of 1,000 for his career, found himself open on the left wing. With the shot clock winding down, Hill calmly drained a clutch three-pointer, not only giving Heidelberg a commanding seven-point lead but also cemented his place in the 1,000-point club. The milestone shot ignited the Student Princes, who outscored Marietta 18-5 in the extra period to seal the win.

Markell Johnson-Nichols was unstoppable, scoring six of his game-high 26 points in overtime and adding two assists to keep the offense clicking. Harden continued his strong play, finishing with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including two timely triples. Panning controlled the paint with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Mason Wisniewski provided a perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance off the bench, contributing 14 points and crucial energy.

Overall, Heidelberg's relentless attack overwhelmed Marietta. The Student Princes outscored the Pioneers 54-50 in the paint, 28-30 at the free-throw line, and controlled the boards with a 35-30 rebounding edge. Their defense in overtime was airtight, holding Marietta to just one field goal in the extra frame.

The Student Princes return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when they travel to face Ohio Northern. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
