Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB races past WITT in Battle of the Bergs

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Who says you can't go home … and beat your alma mater by 26 points? Heidelberg University Men's Basketball Head Coach Andy Bucheit, a 2005 Wittenberg graduate, guided the Student Princes to a resounding victory over the Tigers, 96-72. The Berg had five players in double figures, led by Elijah Harden's 24 points.

Heidelberg has won two straight, improving to 6-4 on the season. Wittenberg fell to 4-5.

Harden's 24 came on an impressive 6-for-8 night from beyond the arc. Markell Johnson-Nichols served as the facilitator of the offense, pairing eight assists with 15 points. He added four steals.

Eric Panning had a double-double, notching 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jaiden Guerra-Howard and Manny Hill finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

An 8-0 run midway through the first half helped Heidelberg push their lead from six to 14 with 10:01 left in the period. HU hit six 3-pointers in the first half, all by different players -- and led, 53-29.

HU hit five 3-pointers in the second half, all by Elijah Harden. Relentless for a full 40 minutes, Heidelberg led by as many as 32.

PLAYER NOTES: Harden, whose career began at Thiel, ran his collegiate point total up to 923 … Panning sits 32nd in points (1,020) and 4th in rebounds (825).

UP NEXT: After the Christmas holiday, Heidelberg returns to action with a game at Kent State on Dec. 29. The game -- which serves as an official contest for the Golden Flashes, but merely an exhibition for Heidelberg -- is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
