ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Facing the No. 3 team in the country is never an easy task. But facing the No. 3 team in the country, on the road, when they shoot 62% from long range is nearly impossible.
Accordingly, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team lost to host Mount Union, 94-71.
Heidelberg fell to 12-5 (7-3 OAC), while conference-leading Mount Union improved to 16-1 (9-1 OAC). The Purple Raiders have won eleven straight since the Student Princes dealt them an 82-70 loss in Tiffin on Dec. 3.
Mount Union came out red hot, sinking three consecutive triples in the first three minutes. After falling behind 20-8, Heidelberg took action by outscoring the Purple Raiders 24-11 over the next eight minutes. The burst was captained by
Emmanuel Perdue who notched nine of those points.
A 3-pointer from
Brady Bosma at 3:40 gave Heidelberg a brief 35-34 edge. Unfortunately, the home team would go to work on an 11-0 run as they finished the half with a 45-35 advantage.
The teams' first clash in Seiberling featured Mount Union shooting a mere 18% from deep in the first half. In a polar opposite performance, they came out 66.7% (8-12) in this matchup.
Zane Leitwein found a shot from deep a minute into the second half. After eight points from the Purple Raiders, Heidelberg boasted their own 10-0 run where
Isaiah Young and Perdue each found three points and
Seth Hohman picked up his first 3-pointer.
Things got rocky as Mount Union extended their lead to 17 during a 14-2 run over three minutes.
Jashun Cobb managed to stop the streak with a successful and-one play at 11:00. Later, he would find another layup for his 11th point of the day.
Hohman and
DJ Ferguson would each pick up another trey of their own before the teams emptied their benches.
Perdue (15), Young (13) and Cobb (11) led the way for the 'Berg offense while
Eric Panning and Perdue each pulled down six rebounds.
While Heidelberg outrebounded Mount Union in the first half, the home team ended with a 33-30 edge on the boards.
Heidelberg travels to Berea on Wednesday as they take on Baldwin Wallace (8-9, 4-6 OAC) for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
