DELAWARE -- Behind a 22-point performance by
Emmanuel Perdue, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team erased a 15-point second-half deficit and beat Ohio Wesleyan, 72-70. In their final tune-up before the start of conference action, the Student Princes held the Battling Bishops to zero field goals over the final 10:49.
Perdue had the final four points for The Berg -- a game-tying jumper with 1:12 left, and a pair of go-ahead free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
Unlike Tuesday's win over Albion, in which HU shot over 50% from beyond the arc, the Student Princes struggled from long range. HU was 4-for-19 (21.1%) from distance. Instead, the Tricolor relied heavily on their ability to score in the paint -- outscoring OWU in the paint, 42-18.
Within the first nine minutes of action, OWU (3-2) built a 13-point lead. Perdue capped a 7-0 run for The Berg with a layup, getting his team back to within six. The hosts led 41-34 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by
Seth Hohman opened the scoring after intermission, cutting the OWU lead down to four. After weathering a 'Berg surge early in the period, the Battling Bishops used a 10-0 run to take a 57-42 lead with 15:28 to play.
Consecutive jumpers by
Isaiah Young, who finished with 10 points, followed by a triple-hit from
Zane Leitwein helped the visitors regain momentum.
Free throws from
DJ Ferguson with 11:33 left put HU down five at 61-56 -- but OWU responded with a pair of layups by Jack Clement.
From there, however, the Battling Bishops only managed to put five foul shots on the board. Heidelberg countered with a steady diet of dribble-drive looks from Perdue and Young to surge ahead. Panning had five of his game-high nine rebounds during the home stretch.
Heidelberg, now 4-1 and winners of four straight, outrebounded Ohio Wesleyan, 53-37. Perdue and
Amil Jenkins each had seven boards in the win.
The Student Princes open up Ohio Athletic Conference action at home on Wednesday. HU hosts Baldwin Wallace at 7 p.m.
