Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Woods wins it with late 3-pointer

TIFFIN -- While it was a far cry from their 33-point win in Berea in December, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team gleefully emerged with a one-point win over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday night.  A late 3-pointer by Dylan Woods, coupled with a critical BW miss at the foul line, gave the Student Princes a 65-64 victory.

With the win, Heidelberg swept the season series from BW for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Woods had a game-high 17 points and a team-high three assists.  Emmanuel Perdue tallied 16 points and eight rebounds.

Zane Leitwein had 13 points and Isaiah Young added 10 in the win -- Heidelberg's first one-point victory since a 68-67 win over Mount Union early in 2020.

Heidelberg (13-3, 8-2 OAC) and Baldwin Wallace (11-5, 6-3 OAC) remained within three points of each other for the final 20:55 of the game.

Bolstered by a few incredibly difficult baskets from Jake Snyder, the Yellow Jackets led 61-58 with 63 seconds left.  Young went to the line and hit a pair of free throws to cut the 'Berg deficit to one.

As BW looked to drain the clock with perimeter passes, Young stepped in front of a Christian Pfeiffer pass.  The freshman quickly raced the length of the floor and gracefully laid the ball in off the glass with his right hand.  The fast-break bucket gave HU a 62-61 advantage with 35 seconds to play.

On the ensuing possession, BW's Anthony Mazzeo dribbled all over the offensive end and eventually hit a tough running layup.  The basket put the visitors up one with 22.5 seconds left.

After a BW timeout, Heidelberg went to work.  Young drove into the paint, but was stopped by Snyder.  Having picked up his dribble, Young looked for someone to pass to.  Along the arc, Woods took a couple steps to his right before darting back left to the wing.  Young's feed hit Woods in stride.  The Cincinnati native buried the 3-pointer in the face of a hard-charging Shane Zaiba, putting HU up 65-63 with 7.1 left on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets chose not to take a timeout and advanced into the forecourt.  There, with 1.7 seconds left, Snyder drew a foul that sent him to the line in the one-and-one with a chance to tie.  Snyder's first was pure, but the second clanged off the rim twice and fell into the waiting arms of Leitwein.  Time expired before the Yellow Jackets could foul.

The game featured 11 ties and 14 lead changes.

Heidelberg dominated in the paint, outscoring BW, 42-26. HU held a one-rebound advantage on the glass, thanks to a game-high 11 boards from Eric Panning.

Now with 1,117 career points, Woods moved into 20th place on Heidelberg's all-time scoring list.  He passed Nate Davis (2009-13) and is 19 points behind Marc Streeter (1984-88).

The OAC slate continues on Saturday as Heidelberg visits Wilmington College.  The men's game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game (slated for a 2 p.m. start).
