Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pair of 20 point performances propel 'Berg to win

Quick Synopsis
The winning streak continued for Heidelberg University men's basketball as the Student Princes improved to 4-0 with a 85-74 victory over Ohio Northern at home. Heidelberg led by as many as 21 in the front game of the weekend series with the Polar Bears

Three Stars
1. Emmanuel Perdue contributed 20 points on offense for the Student Princes, he also led the team in assists with four and collected three rebounds. Perdue scored 16 of his points in the first half, but his four points in the second half all came at critical junctures.

2. Zane Leitwein, a freshman, earned 17 minutes of action and used them to lead Heidelberg in rebounds with seven.  He also recorded seven points.

3. Alex Arellano scored 20 points, shooting 4-7 from 3-point range, and brought down three rebounds.

Full Recap
The first major lead came off a 16-9 run for Heidelberg spanning much of the opening six minutes and gave the Student Princes a 16-11 lead. Dylan Woods contributed six points to the Heidelberg charge.

Two minutes later, a pair of ONU 3-pointers tied the score at 18 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Perdue responded by leading the Student Princes on a 7-2 run in which he scored all seven points for Heidelberg. The run encompassed two minutes and gave the home team a 25-20 lead.

A 14-8 run for Heidelberg to finish the half led to a 48-37 lead, the largest of the half. The run was highlighted by Arellano and Perdue, scoring five and four points respectively.

Heidelberg began the second half with a 5-3 run with Arellano scoring all five points. The Polar Bears came back with a 10-4 run to bring the score to 57-50.

Once again, Heidelberg responded to the pressure with a 14-0 run to take a 71-50 lead with about eight minutes remaining in the game. Leitwein led the scoring drive with five points.

As quickly as the lead grew for Heidelberg, it shrank just as quickly with a 13-2 run from the Polar Bears, bringing the score to 73-63.

However, it seemed as though each time ONU crept to within 10, Heidelberg found a way to score points. Exemplifying the tenacity of the Student Princes, Seth Hohman gathered two offensive rebounds and was fouled twice on one possession.  He sank a pair of free throws which gave HU a 77-65 lead with 2:06 to play.

Heidelberg stayed cool under pressure in the final four minutes, making seven of eight free throw attempts brought on by ONU fouling to stop the clock, to earn a victory 85-74.

Three Takeaways
1. Heidelberg controlled the key, leading in rebounds (31-22), and points in the paint (42-30).

2. Heidelberg's 10 steals led to 22 points off turnovers for the Student Princes.

3. Both teams had four starters with double figure points, only 11 of Heidleberg's points came from the bench.

Beyond the Box Score
  • Heidelberg has started 4-0 in OAC play for the first time since the heralded 1983-84 squad, coached by John Hill.

  • Both sides shot better than 50% from the floor, with ONU hitting on 26-48 (54.2%) and The Berg shooting 31-59 (52.5%).  For the Tricolor, it was just their third time over 50% from the floor in their last 30 games.

  • HU held ONU to just five offensive rebounds -- the fewest allowed since they gave up five to Capital on Feb. 7, 2019.
