NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The No. 22 Heidelberg University men's basketball team continued its winning ways with a 92-72 win at Muskingum University on Saturday. Making his first start at Heidelberg, transfer guard
Tre Watkins led all scorers with 24 points.
Watkins and
Zane Leitwein were each 6-of-10 from beyond the arc for Heidelberg, which improved to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in the OAC. In total, the Student Princes hit 16 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Eric Panning finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Dylan Woods served as facilitator, notching seven assists.
The Student Princes struggled early. The Muskies built a 12-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. After HU whittled it down to four, re-inflated their lead to 11 with 15 minutes to play in the half.
Watkins' first 3-pointer capped off a 14-3 run that allowed the Tricolor to tie the game at 24. It was the beginning of an eight-point spurt for Watkins -- brother of former Student Prince Tamal Watkins.
In all, a 22-5 stretch for Heidelberg changed the complexion of the game. The Berg went into the locker room up one, 50-49.
Up four with 13 minutes left in the second half, The Berg embarked on another big run over a five minute span. The 15-3 surge was buoyed by seven points from Panning and two 3-pointers from Watkins.
The Muskies (2-7, 0-4) drew to within 11 before triples from Leitwien and
Nakhi Taylor helped HU regain momentum, which it maintained the rest of the way.
The Berg shot over 50% from the floor (36-for-70) and only committed seven turnovers. HU held a drastic 26-4 edge in points off turnovers.
Heidelberg improved to 4-0 in OAC action for the first time in a non-covid year since the vaunted 1983-84 campaign.
In 10 games this season, six different Student Princes have led the team in scoring. Eight players are averaging nine or more points.
Tuesday's game at Oberlin has been canceled as the Yeomen work through COVID protocols. Heidelberg is actively searching for a new opponent to play either before or after Christmas. If an opponent is found, details will be posted at BergAthletics.com.
