Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

BW slips past The Berg

BEREA -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball let a narrow halftime lead slip away in a tight 70-67 loss on the road at Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday evening.

The Student Princes (7-11, 5-6 OAC) were led in scoring by Tamal Watkins who poured in 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Watkins also added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Dylan Woods contributed 18 points as well for HU. Woods also chipped in five boards and two steals. Bailey Croft had a team-high three steals.

Heidelberg led by as many as seven in an evenly-played first half.  Woods sent HU into halftime with a 34-32 lead by way of a layup with less than a minute to play.

In the second half, it was BW who built up a seven-point advantage on several occasions.  The Berg remained within striking distance and made a late charge.

Trailing by six with less than three minutes remaining, Watkins cut the deficit in half with a three-point play.  After a BW miss, Seth Hohman tied the game with a 3-pointer.

The Yellow Jackets answered with five straight points and lead 68-63 with 40 seconds left.  Watkins was fouled and hit two free throws with 29 seconds left.  Then, HU forced a BW turnover and called for a timeout with 26 seconds remaining.

Unable to get a shot up right away, HU took another time out with 19 seconds left.  Watkins hit a jumper with 9 seconds to play, getting The Berg to within one at 68-67.  Immediately fouled on the inbound, Jake Snyder sank two free throws with six seconds left.

Watkins' look at a potential game-tying three pointer missed the mark at the buzzer.

Baldwin Wallace was led by a trio of double-digit scorers in Alex Nahra (15), Michael Quiring (11) and Luke Schaefer (10). Drew Sova led all players with 11 rebounds.

HU was able to collect more steals than the Yellow Jackets, but BW held advantages in shooting percentage (50% to 45%), rebounding (38 to 23), assists (14 to 6) and bench scoring (33-8).

Heidelberg will return home on Saturday before getting back on the road for two straight. On Saturday, Wilmington will visit Seiberling Gymnasium for a 3 p.m tipoff.
