TIFFIN -- Sharp-shooting John Carroll was too much for the Heidelberg University men's basketball team to handle, as the Student Princes fell 82-74 on Wednesday night. The visitors shot an even 50% from beyond the arc in the victory.
In the loss,
Tamal Watkins poured in a season-high 24 points and added four assists.
Alex Arellano added 18 points and five rebounds.
Heidelberg (5-9, 3-4) had to play catch-up the entire first half. A 9-2 run by JCU midway through the first half gave the Blue Streaks a 21-13 advantage. The Berg responded with an 8-0 run, tying the game at 21 with eight minutes left before intermission. John Carroll responded and took a 36-28 lead into halftime.
The Blue Streaks (11-3, 4-3) pushed their lead out to as many as 14 in the second half. An 8-0 run capped by a Tamal Watlkins floater drew HU to within six at 66-60 with five minutes left. After getting a stop on defense, The Berg was poised to continue their momentum. Unfortunately, an off-balance jumper rattled out, and JCU capitalized back-to-back 3-pointers.
Heidelberg was able to cut the deficit down to six in the closing seconds, but ran out of time.
Six Blue Streaks ended up in double figures, paced by Connor Fitzgerald's 16 points off the bench.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday against Muskingum. As part of an Alumni Day doubleheader, the men's squad will play at 2 p.m. and the women's game will follow.
