MARIETTA, Ohio -- The No. 8 seed Heidelberg University men's basketball team could not complete the upset as they fell to the No. 1 seed Marietta College 94-80. Despite forcing the game into overtime in the waning seconds, the Pioneers ran away with the lead in the extra period.

Heidelberg finishes the season 11-15 overall.

Myron Prewitt led the Student Princes with his fourth career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Mike Mason added 14 points, a new career-high for the Cleveland native. Chris Moxley scored 12 points in the losing effort.

With the clock dwindling down, Moxley drove through the Marietta defense. His layup with 1.6 seconds left banked off the glass and in -- tying the game at 76. A 3-pointer by the Pioneers at the buzzer hit the back iron and bounced out, sending the game into overtime.

After the hosts took a 78-76 lead in the extra period, Michael Davis stepped into a triple from the wing to give HU their first lead of the game at 79-78.

The lead would be short-lived as MC would close out overtime on a 16-1 run, sealing the win and ending the Berg's season.

"The guys really battled hard tonight and we are so proud of them," said head coach Andy Bucheit. "They gave us a great chance to win."

Turnovers and cold shooting by HU allowed for the hosts to jump out to a 9-2 lead after 90 seconds of play.

Heidelberg cut the Marietta lead to 14-11 when Moxley found Prewitt for a 3-pointer from the wing. At the other end, the Pioneers responded with a triple in the corner from Anthony Wallace.

Trailing by seven points, a Prince Benson jumper and a layup from Kiere Bennie brought the visitors to within three points. RaNeal Ewing answered for the Pioneers with a stepback 3-pointer to give MC a 28-22 advantage with 8:03 before halftime.

The Pioneers would hold a single-digit lead for the rest of the half and took a 44-37 lead into the break.

Marietta would push their lead back to nine points early in the second half -- but HU would not go down quietly.

Alex Arellano split a pair of free throws, and at the other end CJ Marshall would force a MC turnover and pick up the steal. An initial 3-point attempt from the Berg fell short, but Benson grabbed the rebound and kicked it out to Davis in the corner who buried the three and cut the deficit to 50-45. The shot forced the hosts to call timeout with 16:13 left in regulation.

With Marietta holding an 8-point advantage, Marshall found Davis in the corner. Davis knocked down the triple midway through the second half to cut the deficit to 62-57. After a defensive stop a layup from Arellano cut the Pioneer lead to three points.

Layups from Moxley and Bennie with 4:11 remaining knotted the game at 70.

After the teams held each other scoreless for over two minutes, HU was whistled for a foul. Anthony Wallace sank the first free throw attempt. Wallace missed the second, but the rebound was grabbed by MC's Kyle Dixon, who fed Wallace for a 3-pointer. The shot gave the home team a 74-70 lead with 1:25 left.

Prewitt banked a jumper off the glass with 46 seconds left to cut the score to 76-74. At the other end AJ Edwards, the reigning OAC Player of the Year, could not connect on a 3-point attempt and the rebound was hauled in by Andrew Grothouse -- setting up Moxley's exciting basket.

Marietta scored 21 points off 19 HU turnovers. The Student Princes were whistled for 30 fouls in the game.

The loss ends the career for senior guard DeAvery Collins. In his three seasons with Heidelberg, Collins finished his career averaging 9.7 points per game. Collins made a crucial free throw with 0.4 seconds on the clock to give HU an 87-86 win over Baldwin Wallace on Jan. 25.

"The future is bright at Heidelberg and anything is possible if these young men work tirelessly to improve," said Bucheit. "We are excited for next season."
