Box Score TIFFIN -- Shooting woes plagued the Heidelberg University men's basketball team in a 59-53 loss to Capital University on Wednesday. The Student Princes shot 1-12 and turned the ball over four times during the final 12:13 of the game.
Heidelberg, which led by as many as 10 in the second half, dropped its fifth straight and slipped to 6-8, 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improved to 9-5, 4-3 with the win.
Three Student Princes reached double figures in scoring -- Kiere Bennie and DeAvery Collins with 12 apiece, and Chris Moxley with 11 points.
After falling behind 14-8, the Student Princes used an 11-1 run to take a 19-15 advantage. Layups by Bennie and Mike Mason, along with a dunk from Bennie tied the score at 14 with ten minutes remaining in the first half.
Following a Capital free throw, Prince Benson's layup gave HU the lead. The run was capped by a Collins triple from the wing.
Heidelberg extended the lead to 10 later in the half with 3-pointers by Andrew Grothouse and Collins.
In the second half, the Crusaders steadily chipped away at the Heidelberg lead. A 3-pointer by Joey Weingartner had CAP a two-point lead with 13:31 to play.
HU countered with quick buckets by Myron Prewitt and Collins to regain an edge at 47-43 with 12:13 before the offensive flow turned into a trickle.
Down the stretch, the visitors led by as many as seven. With about a minute remaining, Bennie hit two free throws to cut the deficit to three. After Grothouse forced a turnover, a potential game-tying 3-pointer by Bennie rattled in and out.
As a team, Heidelberg blocked a season-high 10 shots as a team -- led by Myron Prewitt's four rejections. Capital controlled the rebounding battle, 45-37, including a 17-8 edge on the offensive glass. Capital's Tyrel Jackson had a game-high 17 points in the win.
Head coach Andy Bucheit on the game: "I thought we weren't as sound in the second half ... we just didn't have the grit and toughness to finish plays ... we had some costly turnovers down the stretch."
The Student Princes travel to No. 23 Marietta College (10-4, 5-2) on Saturday. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m.
