Last-second layup completes MBB comeback

Box Score

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team held the lead for just 1:20 of its thrilling 88-87 win over Trine University -- and 1:18.8 of that came early in the first half.

Freshman Alex Arellano's put-back with 1.2 seconds left gave the Student Princes the one-point lead and capped a frantic second-half comeback.

The 'Berg trailed by as many as 14 and were down 86-81 with 1:17 remaining. A Myron Prewitt right-handed layup cut the lead down to three.

Coming out of a timeout after a Trine miss, junior Kiere Bennie completed an and-one to tie the game at 86. HU was whistled for a foul at the other end, but Trine could only convert the second free throw.

In the waning seconds of the game, Arellano snagged the rebound off of a deflected Bennie floater. The freshman used a right-handed put-back to send the Seiberling Gymnasium crowd into a frenzy.

Trine's desperation pass was intercepted by Prewitt, sealing the Student Prince win.

Bennie led the Student Princes with 21 points, including a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc -- all in the second half. His triple from the left corner with 5:17 left cut the Thunder lead down to four at 79-75. The junior had nine rebounds and three assists.

Prewitt added 12 points. Chris Moxley finished the night with 11 points and seven assists. Mike Mason chipped in with 10 points.

Will Dixon (21 points) and Kyle Dodson (20 points) paced the Thunder offense.

Heidelberg improved to 3-2 on the season, while Trine dropped to 3-3.

NOTES & QUOTES

Heidelberg dominated play in the paint -- outscoring Trine 44-22.

The Student Princes shot 79% from the line compared to Trine's 63%.

The HU bench outscored Trine 37-24.

Head coach Andy Bucheit on the comeback: "These guys never quit ... Their effort was great the entire game ... We weren't making winning plays in the beginning, but we made them the last 10 minutes ... I thought a huge key was that no matter what five guys were in, everyone made winning plays."

Bucheit on the clutch play of Arellano: "The nice thing about him is that he goes out there and plays hard no matter what ... He was in the right position at the right time to make that play, and it's because he keeps playing hard and focusing on the next play."
