Men's Basketball falls at #18 Mount Union

Box Score

TIFFIN - The Heidelberg University men's basketball team came up short on Wednesday on the road, falling to 18th-ranked Mount Union. The Student Princes hung around and even led midway through the first half, but a late run by the Purple Raiders gave them a double-digit halftime lead that they would not relinquish.

KEY STATS

Heidelberg (7-5, 2-3 OAC) had a tough time in the post for the game, as both Maurice Hunter and James Hanley fouled out of the game, forcing the Student Princes to play deep into their bench.

Kiere' Bennie reached the 20-point mark for the second time this year, scoring a team-high 20 points while pulling down 4 rebounds. His other game this season above that mark was his career-high 31 points against Westminster on November 20th.

Myron Prewitt scored a season-high 13 points off the bench in the loss. This was the 5th game of the season he has reached double-figures in scoring.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Early on, the two sides traded baskets until the Berg took a 13-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Prewitt with 15:32 to play in the first half. Mount Union quickly bounced back and took a four-point lead of their own (19-15) at the 12:18 mark.

The game continued to be a battle as Heidelberg regained a one-point lead (26-25) with 8:33 remaining after a jumper by Hunter, but the Purple Raiders had an answer and built a lead that stretched as big as 14 before Heidelberg cut it to 12 (47-35) at halftime.

Mount Union (9-3, 5-0 OAC) came out of the locker room in the second half strong and quickly pulled away, building their lead out to 30 (70-40) with 13:10 to play.

Heidelberg did not let the hole grow any larger as the game wore on, but the Purple Raiders wound up winning by a final score of 104-80.

UP NEXT

The Student Princes return home on Saturday, January 9th, when they play host to Otterbein. That OAC contest is slated to start at 2:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
