Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio –Despite 21 points from freshman Kiere Bennie, the 2014-15 season for the Heidelberg University men's basketball team came to an end with a 75-66 loss at John Carroll University. The Blue Streaks, the No. 2 seed in the OAC tournament, advances to face No. 3 seed Mount Union on Thursday. The Student Princes finish the year 11-15, a four-win improvement from a season ago.
Bennie had four rebounds and three steals to go along with his 21 points. He finished the season with 365 points and reached double figures in each of the Berg's final 14 games.
DeAvery Collins was the only other Student Prince in double figures. Collins had 13 points and six rebounds.
John Carroll outshot the Student Princes in all phases – 44.8% to 34.5% from the floor, 53.8% to 40.6% from beyond the arc, and a dismal 59.3% to 42.9% from the foul line.
Midway through the first half, Heidelberg took a 24-18 lead on a pair of free throws by Collins. It would prove to be the largest lead of the game for the Tricolor. John Carroll responded with an 18-2 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the game. The hosts led 36-28 at intermission.
Though the Blue Streaks maintained a comfortable cushion throughout the first portion of the second half, a 3-pointer by Louis Gray at the 11:33 mark to cut the JCU lead down to three, 49-46.
Heidelberg would get to within two when Collins drained a jumper from the top with 3:46 left. The bucket made the score 63-61. John Carroll, closed the game on a 12-3 run – hitting two key 3-pointers before adding six free throws.
The Student Princes were without key component Marcquice Taylor, who missed his second straight game with an injury.
In their final game for Heidelberg, seniors Doug Waldmannstetter and Frank Longhino had four points and three points respectively. Waldmannstetter had a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow senior Cole Williams missed the game due to an injury.
Despite the departure of the three seniors, the future looks bright for Heidelberg head coach Andy Bucheit and the Student Princes. Players slated to return next season scored 92.7% percent of this season's points. Additionally, Deonte Holder – a second team All-OAC selection a year ago – is on pace to return after missing this year with an injury.
