Box Score TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University men's basketball lost its home opener, 81-70, to Albion College on Tuesday. Three Student Princes reached double figures in scoring, led by a career-high 19 points for DeAvery Collins.
The loss set Heidelberg back to 2-2 while the Britons improved to a perfect 3-0 on the young season.
Ben Jones had 14 points and Kiere Bennie chipped in 11 points in the loss. Senior Jackson Blue had eight points, six rebounds and tied a career high with five assists.
A pair of 3-pointers by DeAvery Collins helped Heidelberg get out to an early 8-5 lead. Turnovers plagued the Student Princes throughout the half, which allowed the Britons to build a sizeable lead.
Down 28-18 with 7:48 left in the half, Heidelberg whittled the Albion lead down to five quickly, thanks to a layup by Isaac Everette and a 3-pointer by Jones.
Undeterred, the visitors took their largest lead of the half with a 3-pointer by Robert Ryan in the waning seconds of the period. At intermission, Albion led 42-30.
Early in the second half, a 3-pointer by Chris Moxley cut the Briton lead to six at 45-39. Again, however, HU turnovers helped re-inflate the Albion cushion up to as many as 15 points.
Heidelberg was able to claw their way back to within six with 2:08 remaining. Albion – who had five players in double-figures -- was able to fight through intense pressure by the Tricolor and keep a comfortable lead until the end.
Shooting and rebounding were fairly even between the two schools, but Heidelberg's 22 turnovers (compared to 14 for Albion) spelled disaster. The Britons held a 28-17 edge in points off turnovers.
The Student Princes continued their strong start at the foul line, converting 13 of 14 chances. They are shooting 83.3% at the stripe.
After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Student Princes return to action at home on Saturday. Tipoff with Defiance College (1-2) is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
