Box Score TIFFIN – On a day in which Heidelberg University honored John Hill, the winningest coach in school history, the men's basketball team got back into the win column with a physical 72-66 win over Muskingum University.
Four Student Princes scored in double-figures in the win, which keeps HU in the race for the eighth spot in the upcoming OAC tournament.
Trailing by a point at halftime, Heidelberg (6-17, 2-14 OAC) opened up the second half with a modest 11-5 run to open up a five-point lead.
After the teams traded baskets, the Student Princes went on a 10-2 run over a five minute stretch and took an 11-point lead with six minutes left.
Muskingum (7-16, 2-14 OAC) began to chip away, but struggled to find their outside shot. The Muskies were just 3-of-17 from beyond the arc in the game, including 0-for-8 in the second half.
The Tricolor sealed the game down the stretch with eight free throws in the final 90 seconds. Senior Mike Petrie scored six of his 19 points from the line during that span.
Jackson Blue added 13 points off the bench for Heidelberg. Deonte Holder had 11 points and Keith Mackie contributed 10 points as HU snapped an eight-game slide.
"I'm really proud of our guys for following through with our game plan," said first-year head coach Andy Bucheit. "It was a total team effort, both offensively and defensively."
The Berg defense had 12 steals and held Muskingum's Logan Kimble scoreless. Kimble had averaged 14.5 points per game prior to the contest. Cody Seiler led Muskingum with 19 points.
Jack Hart grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Prior to the game, a suite of offices inside the Saurwein Health & Wellness Center were dedicated in honor of Hill, a 1970 'Berg graduate. Hill amassed 357 wins in 26 season at the helm of Heidelberg men's basketball.
Heidelberg moves up to ninth place in the OAC standings, just one game behind Otterbein University for the eighth and final spot in the tournament. The Cardinals and Student Princes will meet next Saturday in Westerville.
In their final home contest of the season, the Student Princes host Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday. Tipoff with the Yellow Jackets is at 7:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The John Hill dedication was part of the annual Alumni Day celebration ... Roughly 30 men's basketball alumni returned for the festivities ... 2010 graduate Pat Barrett sank a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to give the white team a 110-107 win.
